Teramind NextGen Migration Guide

Updated this week

Important Notes

  • The Teramind NextGen interface is currently exclusive to Cloud deployments. Availability for On-Premises/Private Cloud deployment is planned for Q2, 2026.

  • The NextGen interface is under active development. Some Legacy features are not yet fully migrated, and features marked as "On the Roadmap” represent the planned roadmap rather than a guarantee of future implementation.

Introduction

Teramind NextGen presents a modern, future-ready platform while maintaining seamless operational continuity with the Teramind Legacy environment.

This guide summarizes the new and updated features defining this generational evolution. It also provides a comprehensive feature mapping to help you effortlessly transition legacy functionalities to their new locations in the modernized interface while clarifying current migration limitations and upcoming enhancements.

New Features in Teramind NextGen

In NextGen, we moved away from a legacy, data-heavy interface to a unified workspace. This new interface introduces powerful insights, enhanced analytics, and AI-driven capabilities designed to streamline workflows, improve ease of use, and ensure you extract the highest business value from your Teramind deployment.

Here are some new features and improvements available in Teramind NextGen platform:

AI-Powered Insights & Assistance

  • AI Widget Generator: This flagship feature allows administrators to create custom dashboard widgets using natural language. You can simply type a query (e.g., "Show me a bar chart of the top 10 most used unproductive apps this week") to instantly generate a visual report. Learn More.

  • Timmy for Slack (On the Roadmap): This integration brings Teramind's workforce intelligence directly into Slack. It delivers instant, actionable insights and allows employees to receive AI-driven productivity alerts within their messaging workspace. Timmy is currently being tested and will be available soon. In the meantime, you can check out the press release here.

Reconstructed Video for macOS

NextGen introduces Reconstructed Video for macOS, assembling continuous session playback from app metadata and UI components to eliminate visibility gaps. This feature is vital for Mac environments, as it bypasses strict system-level permissions and privacy prompts that can interrupt traditional video. It provides a resilient, lightweight forensic tool that maintains oversight without the high resource overhead or intrusive prompts of continuous capture.

Specialized Pre-built Dashboards

NextGen introduces several new out-of-the-box dashboards tailored for specific organizational needs:

  • Overview: This default landing dashboard is designed to provide real-time oversight of organizational productivity and security compliance by aggregating employee activity, app/web usage, and policy adherence.

  • Productivity: The completely redesigned dashboard provides an enhanced, granular assessment of workforce efficiency, effectively replacing the Legacy Productivity reports. It combines top-level KPIs and trend charts to distinguish active time from actual output, while providing categorical comparisons by department or location to identify engagement outliers.

  • Employee Monitoring: A high-level dashboard for tracking general app/web activity and engagement along with the live status of online employees.

  • Insider Threat Detection: A security-focused dashboard designed to highlight high-risk behaviors such as outgoing data transfers across various channels.

  • Use Cases Catalog: This is a comprehensive library of pre-configured reporting templates designed to facilitate rapid platform deployment. It allows administrators to readily utilize specific monitoring scenarios, such as tracking remote work efficiency or auditing sensitive data access without having to spend time manually creating custom dashboards from scratch.

You can find these dashboards under the Dashboards > All Dashboards menu.

Modern Integrations & Ecosystem

NextGen streamlines identity management and directory connectivity with top-tier cloud providers:

  • Microsoft Entra ID (On the Roadmap): Native support for Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) provides real-time, automated synchronization of your organizational hierarchy, including all employee and group data, directly from your cloud directory into Teramind. Entra ID integration is currently being tested and will be available soon.

  • Google SSO (On the Roadmap): The easy to setup, Google Single Sign-On feature provides a secure authentication alternative, allowing users to access the Teramind Dashboard with their Google credentials instead of a standard password. Google SSO integration is currently being tested and will be available soon.

Enhanced Configuration & Productivity Tools

  • Access Control Enhancements: NextGen replaces the complex Legacy structure with a unified, rule-driven Access Control framework that consolidates previously fragmented Account-roles, RBAC, and List-type policies. This establishes a single, streamlined workflow to define exactly who can access specific data, features, and resources; or manage configurations.

  • Productivity Profiles: The new dedicated Unclassified Apps/Domains feature acts as a staging area, automatically gathering all uncategorized activity for rapid classification. This allows you to categorize apps and domains in batches, eliminating the need to manually locate them across activity dashboards.

Redesigned Rule Editor

The Rule Editor has been rebuilt with a focus on usability and error prevention. The Rule Summary section now highlights missing requirements and displays helpful messages if a critical component is overlooked, ensuring rules are logically sound before they are deployed.

Unified User Experience & Design

Teramind NextGen introduces a unified look and feel across the entire platform, utilizing a consistent design language that delivers:

  • Standardized Interface: Streamlines navigation through intuitive interface elements like the Dashboard Actions Menu, Context Menus, and Grid displays.

  • Improved Global Search: A persistent Global Search bar allows users to instantly find employee profiles, computers, behavior rules, configuration items, etc. from any screen.

  • Enhanced Customization: The interface provides greater flexibility and personalization through themes and layout options.

  • Updated Guided Tours: To ensure you can effectively navigate new features and updates, the platform has been updated with new, interactive Guided Tours for primary uses cases.

Legacy to NextGen Migration

The following information clarifies the process for users transitioning from the Teramind Legacy environment to NextGen.

Switching Between Legacy and NextGen

To support your transition, we offer the option to switch between the environments upon request. When enabled, you will see a Teramind Legacy / SWITCH TO NEXT GEN button at the top of the dashboard, allowing you to toggle effortlessly between the two environments.

If you require this functionality, please contact your Customer Support Representative for assistance.

Sync Process

Monitoring data and most added items, such as Employees, Computers, Departments, Behavior Policies/Rules, Shared Lists, etc. are synced automatically between the two environments. Configurations and settings common to both environments (for example, monitoring settings) are also synced automatically.

The primary exception to this automatic syncing rule is the BI Reports from the Legacy platform. These reports are migrated automatically (as Custom Dashboards) only once, but any subsequent updates to them must be manually synced. Please see the Syncing Your BI Reports from Teramind Legacy section in the User Guide to learn more about this process.

Features Mapping

The following table maps Legacy menu items and features to their new locations or status in NextGen. This information is subject to change as development continues, so please keep an eye on our Release Notes for the latest updates and changes.

BI Reports

Notes:

  • Online Meetings: On the Roadmap.

  • Some data sources like Tasks, Agent, Computers, etc. are discontinued.

  • Some data points or filters aren’t yet available (e.g., LDAP filters, CIDR locations)

  • When adding widgets, you now have three options: AI-Generated Widgets, Custom Widgets (these are similar to BI Report’s widgets) and a new set of Built-In Widgets (e.g., Live Montage, Employees Online, Snapshots, etc.).

Most of your existing custom BI Reports are migratable depending on their configurations. Please see the Syncing Your BI Reports from Teramind Legacy section to learn more about this process.

Dashboards

No direct migration but replaced by Dashboards.

Notes:

The Legacy Dashboards (e.g., Focus and Enterprise) were not directly migrated because they have been replaced by a more unified and flexible system in NextGen. While Legacy separated high-level snapshots into "Dashboards" and detailed logs into “Monitoring Reports” and "BI Reports", NextGen consolidates these into a single Dashboards framework where both chart snapshots and granular grid widgets exist together. Also, some of the dashboard-specific widgets from Legacy have been migrated such as the “Live Montage”, “Latest Snapshots”, etc. under slightly different names.

As an alternative, users can utilize Built-In Dashboards like Overview or Productivity for standard KPIs, or create Custom Dashboards using three different types of widgets (see above).

Monitoring

No direct migration but replaced by Dashboards.

Notes:

A key functional shift to note: while Legacy Monitoring provided near real-time updates, NextGen Dashboards currently operate on a synchronization cycle similar to Legacy BI Reports. Data typically refreshes every 5–15 minutes, though high volumes can extend this window up to 4 hours. Our roadmap includes plans to narrow this synchronization gap in upcoming releases to bring performance closer to real-time.

Risk

No direct migration but replaced by Dashboards > Behavior Alerts > Risk tab.

Notes:

The Risk report was not directly migrated because its functionality is now consolidated within the Behavior Alerts dashboard's dedicated Risk tab and the AI-driven Insights hub. This integration streamlines the user interface and allows for more advanced analysis, such as detecting "Activity Falsification" patterns through AI and machine learning. Users can replicate or exceed Legacy risk tracking by utilizing the pre-built risk widgets in NextGen or by creating custom reports through the AI-Generated Widgets.

Productivity

No direct migration but replaced by Dashboards > Productivity dashboard.

Notes:

The Productivity report was not directly migrated because its functionality is now replaced by the redesigned Productivity dashboard, which provides a more enhanced and granular hub for assessing workforce efficiency.

OMNI

Notes:

The Insights dashboard is currently in beta and lacks several features found in the Legacy OMNI hub. While users can view unified, real-time AI feeds, the ability to Mute, Dismiss or Comment on individual incidents is not yet implemented and as such the Team Activity section is disabled in the NextGen interface. Additionally, the Severity filter for narrowing down high-risk events and the Investigate feature which shows insights details are not yet available for use in the new platform.

Behavior

Policies

Notes:

The following features aren’t currently supported:

  • Ability to import rules.

  • Templates.

  • Mark rules for the Insights feed.

  • Configure multiple time slots in a rule schedule.

  • Some Schedule rule criteria, such as "Scheduled Work Time" and "Ends Early By” (see the Schedules section).

  • Certain conditions like "Parent folder glob" and "File extension contains".

  • Users may also find that certain inter-criteria logic; for instance, selecting a "Cloud Provider" currently fails to logically restrict the "Network host" selection

  • Some conditions such as the "Match" conditions are not yet supported across all fields.

  • MIP labels in the Content tab (See Microsoft Purview integration below).

Alerts

No direct migration but replaced by Dashboards > Behavior Alerts dashboard.

Notes:

A key functional shift to note: while Legacy Alerts report provided near real-time updates, NextGen Behavior Alerts dashboards currently operate on a synchronization cycle similar to Legacy BI Reports. Data typically refreshes every 5–15 minutes, though high volumes can extend this window up to 4 hours. Our roadmap includes plans to narrow this synchronization gap in upcoming releases to bring performance closer to real-time.

Employees

Notes:

  • Several functionalities from Legacy remain in development:

  • Bulk Edit action for multiple employees.

  • Within the employee profile: RBAC, Authentication (including individual 2FA settings), and Productivity Profile.

  • Language selection under the Account tab.

  • PDF export.

  • LDAP filters.

Computers

Notes:

Several specialized management and diagnostic tools from the Legacy platform remain in development:

  • Auto-update channels.

  • Remote Troubleshooting.

  • FQDN status column.

  • Video export.

  • PDF export.

  • LDAP filters.

Session Player

Notes:

  • NextGen has a new Reconstructed Video mode for macOS.

  • Theme support isn’t yet implemented for the player.

  • The rest of the functionalities remain similar between the two environments.

Configure

Moved under the Configurations menu.

Departments

Notes:

  • Preserve AD sync feature not supported.

  • When deleting a department, there is no warning to show where the department is being used.

Schedules

On the Roadmap

Notes:

Some Schedule rule criteria, such as "Scheduled Work Time" and "Ends Early By” depend on this feature. You must create your schedules in the Legacy environment to use these criteria.

Positions

Notes:

Since the Schedules feature (see above) isn’t implemented yet, the Positions doesn’t support assigning schedule templates yet.

Access Control

Notes:

The Access Control is fully redesigned but compatible with the Legacy policies. The primary difference between the two platforms is that the Access Control screen in NextGen simplifies permissions through a new “rule”-based structure. Unlike the Legacy platform, which utilizes separate List (Regular) and Role (RBAC) policies, NextGen consolidates these into a unified workflow where you create an access rule, grant specific privileges (View, Play, or Configure) to users or departments, and then select the corresponding resources. Additionally, NextGen introduces the ability to create access control policies with highly specific conditions for enabling data from selected resources.

Some legacy permissions, especially the ones from the “Role” policy aren’t yet fully supported. Some of these permissions (e.g., are retained, but you cannot be selected when creating a new policy in NextGen.

Productivity Profiles

Notes:

A new Unclassified Apps/Domains tab is added, which allows you to view all activities that haven’t yet been categorized and quickly classify them.

Legacy Features Under Evaluation

The following list contains features from the Legacy platform that are currently under review for integration or replacement in the NextGen environment. Their final status and implementation details are subject to ongoing development and evaluation.

We are constantly listening to feedback. If these features are critical to your specific workflow, please let your Customer Success Manager know so we can provide workarounds and alternatives.

Legacy Feature

Notes and Alternatives

Time Tracking:

  • Tracker

  • Employee Cost

  • Task Cost

  • Time Records

With NextGen, we are transitioning towards a more automated and native monitoring workflows. That's why we have decided to put the legacy web-based Tracker feature on hold. Since it’s no longer relevant, we’ve also removed the “User can clock in and out using the web interface” option from the Account tab in employee profiles. For contractors or freelancers who previously relied on this feature, we recommend the Revealed Agent. By configuring minimal monitoring, you can grant users manual control over their tracking while still ensuring accurate time and task capture.

Employee Cost and Task Cost have not been migrated as part of a strategic move toward a more fluid, AI-driven reporting experience. Users can replicate cost-related reports by utilizing the AI-Generated Widgets feature or Timmy for Slack (TBA), which allow for natural language queries such as, "Create a table of employees with name, work time, and wage for last month for each day," to establish a baseline for financial calculations. You can also get new insights like “How much money did we spend on unproductive work for each employee last month?”.

The Time Records report is deemed redundant because similar granular data is available through the Productivity Dashboard’s "Productivity detail" widget or via tailored custom dashboards created through the AI generator.

BI Reports:

  • Network Monitoring

As we refine our business intelligence tools, we are focusing on deeper behavioral analytics. Network monitoring remains in our legacy stack as we evaluate more integrated ways to provide these insights in the future.

Integrations:

  • SIEM: LogRhythm

  • SIEM: NetIQ

To keep things moving forward with the new integrations we’re currently developing, we have decided to place these specific legacy options on hold for the time being. Since there has been minimal demand for them, this shift allows our development team to stay laser-focused on the high-utilization security features and integrations our users rely on most. It’s our way of ensuring the platform evolves in a way that stays perfectly in sync with enterprises’ needs.
