Productivity Metrics FAQ: How is Work Time / Idle Time / Activity Percentage / Productive Time / Unproductive Time / Total Time determined

Overview

This article lists every productivity and time related measure (column) you can add to a dashboard widget in Teramind V3. For each one it explains what the value means, its unit and whether Min, Max and Avg versions are available. The same measures power the built-in Productivity dashboard, the Time Worked dashboard and Time Cards.

When measuring Active Time, Productive Time and similar values, Teramind only counts the focused (active) window. For example, if a user was active on youtube.com for 20 minutes, the user stayed on that window or tab for 20 minutes without switching to another window, tab or application.

Measures are grouped by the data they come from:

  • Applications & Webpages: Time spent on applications and websites, split by productivity classification (Productive, Unproductive or Unclassified).

  • Work Time: Time the employee was working, as recorded by the Agent or by clocking in.

  • Input Activity: Keyboard and mouse activity level.

  • Keystrokes: How much the user typed, from keystroke recording.

Min, Max and Avg Measures

Teramind stores time as a series of entries. Each entry is one recorded period of activity, for example a period of time spent on one application or website, or one period of work time.

Most time measures come in four versions. Using Idle time as an example:

  • Idle Time: The total idle time for each row of the widget. This is the standard version.

  • Min Idle Time: The idle time of the shortest single entry in each row.

  • Max Idle Time: The idle time of the longest single entry in each row.

  • Avg Idle Time: The average idle time per entry in each row.

A row is each item the widget breaks the data down by. For example, if the widget is grouped by Employee, each employee is one row. If it is grouped by date, each day is one row (or one bar in a chart).

Avg is the average per entry, not per day. To see a daily average, group the widget by date. This is also different from the "Avg" values described in How Teramind calculates averages, which divide each daily total by the number of days worked.

Why Some Measures Appear Twice

There are two reasons a measure can appear twice in the list:

  • Hours and Seconds Versions: Each time measure exists in two versions with the same name: one in hours and one in seconds. From August 2026 onward, only one version is shown. Older builds show both.

  • Same Measure in Two Data Sources: Time, Idle time and Active time exist in both Applications & Webpages and Work Time. When a widget uses both, each one is listed. Grids add the data source to the column name, for example "Idle time: Work time".

Time Versus Active Time

  • Time (Activity Time): The total time on applications and websites, active plus idle. It is the Applications & Webpages "Time" measure, so its versions are listed as "Min activity time", "Max activity time" and "Avg activity time".

  • Active Time: Only the time with keyboard or mouse input.

In other words: Activity Time = Active Time + Idle Time.

Applications & Webpages Measures

These measures are based on time spent on applications and websites. Only the focused (active) window is counted. Productive, Unproductive and Unclassified come from the classifications in Configurations > Productivity Profiles. To learn how to classify activities, see How to classify activities into productive, unproductive or custom category.

Idle time only starts counting after the Idle Threshold has passed. The default is 10 minutes. You can change it in the Applications settings of a profile in Configurations > Monitoring Profiles. For example, with a 10-minute threshold, 15 minutes without keyboard or mouse input is recorded as 5 minutes of idle time.

  • Min, Max and Avg Versions: Yes. See the Min, Max and Avg Measures section.

Input Activity Measures

These measures are based on keyboard and mouse input, counted in 5-minute intervals. They show how much input there was, not what was typed.

Activity %

  • Measures/Columns: Activity %

  • Unit: Percent

  • Definition: The keyboard and mouse activity level. For each 5-minute interval, Teramind scores keystrokes, mouse clicks and mouse movement and uses the highest of the three, up to 100%. A score of 100% means about 60 keystrokes per minute or more, about 30 clicks per minute or more, or continuous mouse movement. A score of 0% means no input. For each row of the widget, the scores of all intervals are averaged.

  • Min, Max and Avg Versions: No. Activity % is always shown as an average.

  • Note: Activity % is not the same as Active Time. Active Time measures how long there was input; Activity % measures how much input there was.

Color Guide: Some dashboards, such as Time Worked and Time Cards, show activity levels as colors:

Keystrokes Measures

These measures show how much the user typed. They only have data when keystroke recording is enabled in the employee's profile in Configurations > Monitoring Profiles. If keystroke recording is not included in your plan, the Keystrokes data source is shown as locked.

  • Min, Max and Avg Versions: No.

Behavior Rule Time Conditions

The following time values are only used in activity-based behavior rules for applications or websites. They do not appear in dashboard widgets or the standard productivity reports. To learn more, see Configurations > Behavior Policies and How to create a behavior rule.

Time Active

Time Active detects how long a user was actively using a specific application or website, so a rule can trigger after a set amount of time. For example, Time Active (min) >= 30 triggers when a webpage stays active for 30 minutes.

Time Focused

Time Focused detects whether a user stayed on a specific application or website for a set amount of time, whether or not they were actively using it. As long as the user did not switch to another window, the rule can trigger.

Total Time Active, Total Time Idle and Total Time Focused

These work like their counterparts above, but accumulate across the whole day instead of a single visit. They reset at the end of the day, when the date of the last update differs from the current date. The reset follows the user's local time zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is Session Time 0 for the Current Date?

Session Time, Productive Time, Unproductive Time and some other time values are processed in batches and may appear with a delay of up to several hours, especially in cloud-hosted deployments.

Why Is Productive or Unproductive Time Showing as 0?

Most likely no applications or websites have been classified as Productive or Unproductive yet. To learn how to classify them, see How to classify activities into productive, unproductive or custom category. Once they are classified, the time appears in the dashboards.

Why Is Session Time Greater Than 24 Hours for a Single Day?

The employee was logged in to more than one monitored computer. Each computer's session is tracked separately. Add the Computer column to the Productivity dashboard to see the totals for each computer.

Why Is Work Time Greater Than Session Time?

The Stealth Agent may have been offline for a period, for example because of a network issue. If Offline Recording is enabled in Configurations > Monitoring Profiles, the Agent keeps recording activity and Work Time while offline, but cannot track Session Time during the disconnection. By default, offline recording is kept for up to 24 hours.

This can also happen if the user clocked in from the web using Time Tracking instead of the Agent.

Why Is Work Time Less Than Productive Time for Some Users?

This could happen if applications classified as Productive kept running in the background while the user's screen was locked. They added to Productive Time but not to Work Time, which excludes locked screen time.

This was more common in older Agent versions. In current versions, Productive Time is not tracked while the screen is locked, just like Work Time. If you see this issue, update the Agent. See How to update the Teramind Agent remotely.

Why Is Work Time on the Time Worked Dashboard Different From the Live Users Widget?

The Live Users widget on the Employee Monitoring dashboard shows Work Time only for the computer the employee is currently using. The Time Worked and Productivity dashboards total Work Time across all computers the employee used that day.

For Work Time to be recorded, especially with a Stealth Agent, the Agent needs a task. A default task is usually configured, but if it has been reset, Work Time may stop being counted. To fix this:

  1. Go to Configurations > Settings > Agents and set the Default Task. You can also set a default task for each employee on the employee's profile.

  2. Restart the computer so the Agent reconnects and starts tracking Work Time against the new default task.

Why Do I See the Same Measure Twice in the Widget Editor?

Older builds list each time measure in both hours and seconds. Some measures, such as Idle time and Active time, also exist in both Applications & Webpages and Work Time. See Why Some Measures Appear Twice.

Why Is Avg Idle Time in My Widget Different From the Average in Reports?

In a widget, Avg is the average per entry in each row, not per day. Report averages divide each daily total by the number of days worked, as described in How Teramind calculates averages. To see a daily average in a widget, group it by date.

Why Does Productive + Unproductive + Unclassified Time Not Match Work Time?

They come from different data. Productive, Unproductive and Unclassified Time are based on application and website activity, while Work Time is based on work time records from the Agent or from clocking in. For example, time clocked in from the web has Work Time but no application activity. Compare them with Applications & Webpages: Time (Activity time) instead.

Why Is There No Unproductive No Idle Time?

Only Productive has a No Idle version. To get the active time spent on unproductive activities, subtract Unproductive Idle Time from Unproductive Time.

Why Is Activity % Low Even Though the Employee Was Working?

Activity % measures keyboard and mouse input only. Work that involves little input, such as reading, attending meetings or taking calls, gives a low score even if the employee was busy. Use Activity % together with Work Time and Productive Time rather than on its own.

I Changed a Classification. Why Do Old Reports Still Show the Old Value?

New classifications only apply to new activity. To apply them to data that was already collected, use Update Past Classifications on the Productivity Profiles screen.

Why Is Wage Showing as 0?

Wage is only calculated for employees with a rate. Set the Rate field on the employee Personal tab in Employees. See How to Track Payroll and Wages in Teramind.

Why Is Idle Time 0 Even Though the Employee Took Breaks?

Idle time only starts after the Idle Threshold (10 minutes by default). Breaks shorter than the threshold are counted as active time. If the screen was locked during the break, that time is excluded from Work Time and counted only in Session Time. You can change the threshold in Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.
