How to turn off, disable, or suspend websites monitoring

Updated over a week ago

This guide outlines two primary methods for controlling which websites are monitored in Teramind: completely suspending all websites monitoring, or refining the list of websites that are monitored.

Method 1: Completely Suspend Monitoring of a Channel

You can turn off the monitoring of an entire monitoring channel (e.g., Applications, Websites, etc.) for a group of users from the Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

A. For a Group

If you use this method to turns off the Websites monitoring channel, it will suspends all websites tracking (including screen recording, activity logging, and keystrokes) for the selected profile:

1. From the main menu, navigate to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the desired monitoring profile from the list (e.g., "Compliance Team"). You will see a list of monitoring channels.

3. Click the Toggle button next to the desired monitoring channel (e.g., Applications, Websites) to turn it off. This action disables monitoring for that entire channel for all users, computers, departments, and Active Directory groups assigned to the profile.

B. For a Single Employee

You can turn off the monitoring of an entire monitoring channel (e.g., Screen Recording, Applications, Websites, etc.) for a single employee from their profile's Monitoring tab:

1. Select Employees from the main menu.

2. Select an employee by clicking their name. You will be taken to the employee's details screen.

3. Click the Edit Profile button. A panel will open on the right-side of the screen.

4. Select the Monitoring tab.

5. Turn off the channels you don't want to monitor for that profile/group by clicking the Toggle button in front of the channels.

6. Click the Apply changes button to apply and save the changes.

If you change the monitoring setting of an employee, a "Custom profile" will be automatically created and assigned to the employee. Each employee can have their own unique custom profile. A custom profile will override any other monitoring profile(s) the employee is part of.

Method 2: Suspend Monitoring of Selected Websites

Teramind allows you to customize website monitoring by completely suspending tracking for specific websites/domains or targeting specific data channels like screen recording and keystrokes. This is essential for protecting user privacy on sensitive sites, such as personal banking, healthcare portals, or private email accounts.

Completely Suspend the Usage Tracking of Selected Sites

Use these settings to stop Teramind from collecting activity logs, URL history, or time metrics for specific domains or IP addresses.

1. Go to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the relevant Monitoring Profile.

3. Click the Edit button under the Actions column for the Websites channel.

4. Configure the following fields in the Website usage section:

  • Monitor usage of these websites: Only the added websites will be tracked; all others will be ignored.

  • Don't monitor usage of these websites: Teramind will not collect activity statistics or time metrics (e.g., active/idle time) for these specific sites.

  • Don't monitor usage when website content contains: Activities will not be captured for any website containing the specified DOM text in the page source.

  • Don't monitor usage when browsing to these IPs: Activities will not be captured when a user browses to any IP address listed here.

  • Don't monitor usage when browsing to IPs/Domains not in list: Activities will only be captured for the specific IPs/domains in this list and will be suspended for all others.

Result: Excluded sites will not appear in reports like Applications & Websites. Screen and keystrokes will not be recorded, and behavior rules will not trigger for them.

Suspend Screen Recording Only

Use these settings if you want to log the website visit in your reports but want the browser content to be blacked out in recordings.

1. Go to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the relevant Monitoring Profile.

3. Click the Edit button under the Actions column for the Screen Recording channel.

4. Configure the following fields in the Websites recording section:

  • Record the screen of these websites: Screen will be recorded only for these specified sites; all others will be excluded.

  • Don't record the screen of these websites: Excludes specific browser-website pairs from visual recording.

  • Don't record the screen when website content contains: Suspends recording for any page containing the specified source content.

  • Don't record the screen when browsing to these IPs: Excludes screen recording for any website originating from the listed IP addresses.

  • Don't record the screen when browsing to IPs/Domains not in list: Screen recording will be active only for the listed IPs/domains and suspended for all others.

Result: Any website excluded here will appear as a blacked-out window in the Session Player, though the URL and page title may still appear in activity logs.

Suspend Keystroke Logging Only

Use these settings to capture website activity and screen recordings but stop the capturing of typed text within specific websites or IP ranges.

1. Go to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the relevant Monitoring Profile.

3. Click the Edit button under the Actions column for the Websites channel.

4. Configure the following fields in the Websites recording section:

  • Record keystrokes of these websites: Keystrokes will be recorded only for these sites; all others are ignored.

  • Don't record keystrokes of these websites: Defines browser-website pairs where keystrokes will not be captured.

  • Don't record keystrokes when website content contains: Suspends keystroke recording if the page source contains the specified text.

  • Don't record keystrokes when browsing to these IPs: Keystroke logging will be excluded for any website originating from these IP addresses.

  • Don't record keystrokes when browsing to IPs/Domains not in list: Keystrokes will only be recorded for the IPs/domains in this list; all others will be ignored.

Result: Teramind will exclude all keystrokes typed while these websites are active, protecting sensitive form data while maintaining other monitoring metrics.

Advanced: Exclude Websites via Web Traffic and Driver Settings

Modifying advanced monitoring settings can disrupt Teramind's tracking, cause system instability, or prevent network access. Proceed with caution.

These settings manage the system-level Network Driver and web traffic inspection, effectively disabling the Agent's ability to intercept or modify traffic for specified targets.

1. Go to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the relevant Monitoring Profile.

3. Click the Gear button at the top-right to open Profile settings.

4. Select the Advanced tab.

5. Use the Don't track processes below field to exclude any process from all network tracking. For example, if you enter a browser process here (e.g., “chrome.exe”) it will exclude that browser from the network driver's inspection resulting in no web-activity tracking for that browser.

6. Use the Don't monitor web traffic for these websites field to exclude sites from web traffic inspection. Teramind JavaScript will not be injected, and web file events (e.g., uploads/downloads) will be ignored for these sites.

7. Use the Monitor web traffic for these IPs field to limit full web traffic inspection ONLY to the listed IPs/domains; inspection is disabled for all others.

8. Use the Don't monitor web traffic for these IPs to exclude the specified IPs/domains from traffic inspection.

Result: For excluded sites, IPs, or processes, the SSL proxy certificate will not be injected. This disables the capturing of web-based emails, instant messages, and file transfers that rely on HTTPS traffic inspection. Disabling the driver or traffic inspection prevents Behavior Rules that depend on network-level data from functioning for those targets.

Check out the Configurations > Monitoring Profiles section of the User Guide to learn more about these settings.
