How to turn off, disable, or suspend applications monitoring

Updated over a week ago

This guide outlines two primary methods for controlling which applications are monitored in Teramind: completely suspending all application monitoring, or refining the list of applications that are monitored.

Method 1: Completely Suspend Monitoring of a Channel

A. For a Group

You can turn off the monitoring of an entire monitoring channel (e.g., Applications, Websites, etc.) for a group of users from the Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

If you use this method to turns off the Applications monitoring channel, it will suspends all application tracking (including screen recording, activity logging, and keystrokes) for the selected profile:

1. From the main menu, navigate to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the desired monitoring profile from the list (e.g., "Compliance Team"). You will see a list of monitoring channels.

3. Click the Toggle button next to the desired monitoring channel (e.g., Applications, Websites) to turn it off. This action disables monitoring for that entire channel for all users, computers, departments, and Active Directory groups assigned to the profile.

B. For a Single Employee

You can turn off the monitoring of an entire monitoring channel (e.g., Screen Recording, Applications, Websites, etc.) for a single employee from their profile's Monitoring tab:

1. Select Employees from the main menu.

2. Select an employee by clicking their name. You will be taken to the employee's details screen.

3. Click the Edit Profile button. A panel will open on the right-side of the screen.

4. Select the Monitoring tab.

5. Turn off the channels you don't want to monitor for that profile/group by clicking the Toggle button in front of the channels.

6. Click the Apply changes button to apply and save the changes.

If you change the monitoring setting of an employee, a "Custom profile" will be automatically created and assigned to the employee. Each employee can have their own unique custom profile. A custom profile will override any other monitoring profile(s) the employee is part of.

Method 2: Suspend Monitoring of Selected Applications

Teramind allows you to customize application monitoring by completely suspending tracking for specific apps or targeting specific data channels like screen recording and keystrokes. This flexibility helps balance organizational security with user privacy by excluding sensitive tools such as personal banking or private messaging from being recorded.

To suspend or limit the monitoring of selected applications, use the following methods:

Completely Suspend the Usage Tracking of Selected Applications

Use this setting to stop Teramind from collecting any metrics, keystrokes, or visual data for specific applications.

1. Go to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the relevant Monitoring Profile.

3. Click the Edit button under the Actions column for the Applications channel.

4. In the Don't monitor usage of these applications field, enter the specific executable file names of the applications you wish to exclude. Alternatively, you can enter applications you wish to monitor in the Monitor usage of these applications field. In that case, reset of the applications will be excluded from monitoring.

Result: Teramind will not collect activity statistics or time metrics (active/idle time). Screen and keystrokes will not be recorded, and behavior rules will not trigger for these applications. The application window will be automatically blacked out in the Session Player.

Suspend Screen Recording Only

Use this setting if you want to continue tracking activity metrics but want the application window to be blacked out in recordings.

1. Go to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the relevant Monitoring Profile.

3. Click the Edit button under the Actions column for the Screen Recording channel.

4. In the Don't record the screen of these applications field, enter the executable names you wish to exclude. Alternatively, you can enter applications you wish to monitor in the Record the screen of these applications field. In that case, reset of the applications will be excluded from screen recording.

Result: Any applications excluded here will appear blacked out in all screen recordings and during Live View.

Suspend Keystroke Logging Only

Use this setting to capture activity and screen recordings but stop the capturing of typed text within specific applications.

1. Go to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the relevant Monitoring Profile.

3. Click the Edit button under the Actions column for the Keystrokes channel.

4. Use the Don't record keystrokes of these applications field to specify the apps you wish to exclude. Alternatively, you can enter applications you wish to monitor in the Record keystrokes of these applications field. In that case, reset of the applications will be excluded from keystrokes recording.

Result: Teramind will not capture keystrokes from excluded applications while continuing to record other activity based on your settings.

Advanced: Exclude Application Processes from System Drivers

Modifying advanced monitoring settings can disrupt Teramind's tracking, cause system instability, or prevent network access. Proceed with caution.

You can exclude specific processes from the system-level drivers to prevent all tracking or DLP scanning for those processes.

1. Go to Configurations > Monitoring Profiles.

2. Select the relevant Monitoring Profile.

3. Click the Gear button at the top-right to open Profile settings.

4. Select the Advanced tab.

5. Enter processes in the DLP for processes field to exclude them specifically from DLP scanning (Content Sharing rules).

6. Use the Don't track processes below field under the File driver section to exclude specific processes from local file activity tracking (Access, Read, Write, Rename, etc.).

7. Use the Don't track processes below field under the Network driver section to exclude specific processes from network and web-based activity tracking.

Result: Excluded processes will bypass the specified driver's inspection. Disabling tracking for the File driver will stop monitoring local file operations and certain app-based communications for those processes. Disabling tracking for the Network driver will prevent SSL injection and stop capturing network-based activities, web emails, instant messaging, etc. for those specific processes.

Check out the Configurations > Monitoring Profiles section of the User Guide to learn more about these settings.
